Headaches affect close to 50 percent of the population at least once per year, making them one of the most common nervous system disorders in the world (ChiroNexus). This may not come as a surprise to those of you who personally suffer from headaches or know family members or friends whose daily lives are punctuated by debilitating migraines, cluster headaches, or tension headaches.
Tension headaches, also known as stress headaches, are very common and are said to affect 80 percent of headache sufferers. Tension/Stress headaches are distinguished by the spreading of a moderate pain across the head in the shape of a band, whereas migraines are usually present on one side of the head (John Hopkins Medicine).
With tension headaches affecting such a great portion of the population, sufferers and doctors eagerly seek new sources of relief. Researchers conducted a study published in the February 2016 issue of European Journal of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine to determine whether or not chiropractic adjustments can treat tension headaches.
The study consisted of 62 women ages 18-65 and revealed that the individuals who received spinal manipulation showed great improvement, and not just with their headaches. The women who received chiropractic care reported higher quality of life, social function, and of course, a significant reduction in head pain.
Chiropractic adjustments not only treat tension/stress headaches, but also free your mind from the stress brought on by the regular suffering from headaches. By relieving your mind of stress, your body is able to shift its energy to more worthwhile sources such as social events, meditation, and reaching professional or personal goals.
Improving your overall wellness can also help prevent tension headaches in the first place. Because they’re brought on by stress and persistent muscle spasms, tension headaches can be prevented by practicing stress management and regular chiropractic adjustments.
