Given the past few months, there’s no doubt that health has been brought to the forefront of our collective consciousness. We are all more aware of how we feel, how we move and how we interact with the world around us. How have you felt during the quarantine phases — stressed, scared, or at peace and working on yourself? Every day we have a choice as to how we will respond to stressors, negative news and just the regular beat of our daily lives.
By now, the changes that seemed strange — the ones we had to embrace as our “new normal” a few weeks or months ago — are indeed the accepted norm. But what is unique about our society’s adaptation to a health threat is that the tactics we use to approach our health and wellness are nothing new. The underlying truth about the importance of health remains the same: those who use food as medicine to boost their immune systems, who move regularly and with joy, and who nourish their minds and bodies with positive thoughts and actions can thrive and adapt to many unforeseen circumstances.
NUTRITION
First, let’s talk about food. For centuries, scientists have learned that foods dense in antioxidants certainly boost our immune systems to protect us against outside threats. Reach for blueberries, spinach, sweet potatoes and fish as the powerhouses, then season them with tumeric, ginger and garlic. Looking for a snack? Think almonds, oranges, kiwis and bell peppers! Let us not forget about green tea, a comforting, energy-boosting drink that is rich with flavonoids, the same powerful antioxidant as blueberries.
You’ll notice all the foods listed above are whole foods, meaning we eat them in their natural form. All whole foods are extremely beneficial in comparison to processed foods, which actually are a detriment to our immune systems. Processed foods are high in salt, fat and sugar, meaning they not only throw off the balance of our gut, but also lead to inflammation. When our bodies are inflamed, our immune system takes a hit and does not protect us like it should. In short, stay away from processed foods and opt for whole foods instead.
EXERCISE
During the strictest periods of quarantine, health professionals told the masses to get moving. Why? Because when the body is in motion, circulation increases, which boosts the presence of immune cells throughout our bodies. When we sit around (and make a habit of not moving regularly) our systems literally become stagnant. To keep the good stuff circulating and our healthy cells checking in on all parts of our body, we need to get up and move. And yes, walking counts! A short walk or jog works wonders.
Circulation is just the beginning of the benefits of exercise. It also reduces our stress hormones and releases positive endorphins, giving our mental health a much-needed boost. It also lowers our risk of heart disease, helping shield us from other harmful side effects and weaknesses that come with it.
When it comes to exercise, the key is to make it a habit. The more you do it, the more benefits you will reap. For those who are unfamiliar with exercise, it will be uncomfortable at first, and that is a good thing! You will wake your body up in ways it hasn’t experienced in a long time. Start with just 10-30 minutes per day of moving intentionally, and the positive energy you experience from that short period of exercise will keep you coming back.
CHIROPRACTIC
Like with nutrition and exercise, chiropractic gives the body the help it needs to heal itself. When we are experiencing pain or are not properly aligned, our central nervous system is not getting the correct information from the rest of our bodies. The central nervous system is quite actually the brain behind the operation of how our bodies function each and every day. To improve our overall function, our CNS needs vital information and feedback from every one of our organs, our limbs and our nerves. When something is not right and the communication becomes obstructed, more injuries can occur, inflammation can increase and our moods can decline.
Chiropractors open up the communication systems between the CNS and the rest of our bodies, allowing us to reach our highest potential physically and mentally, whether that is to simply live a pain- and disease-free life or to achieve optimal levels of athletic performance.
